Ok so now let’s focus on the best thing about visiting Berlin, food. This post contains just a few of my favorite places to eat in Berlin. When I used to live there I wasn’t very original when it comes to local cuisine and I used apps like Yelp or Trip Advisor a lot, but I also discovered a few places you wouldn’t find online. I hope you not too hungry when you reading this post 🙂

Döner Kebab!

You can’t visit Berlin and not try a kebab. Kebab shops are literally EVERWHERE around Berlin and each person has their own favorite place. For me the best kebab is located in Hackescher Markt, it’s on the opposite side of the Starbucks and is in the same building as the grocery shop called Edeka. While you may have heard about a place called Mustafas Gemusedoner which is apparently the most popular Kebab shop through the  tourist circle. I’ve been there once, stood in a line for about 40 minutes to have an ok Kebab. It wasn’t bad but also wasn’t worth the time I spent to get there, and in line to get the Kebab.  For those who don’t know what a kebab is, in simple terms it’s something between a sandwich and burger (with amazing bread btw) filled with meat (normally lamb, but you can find beef or chicken sometimes), salads and sauces. Basically it is just amazing 🙂

Fried Chicken

Yes while you can go into your local KFC just about anywhere in the world ,that is not what I am talking about here. You can also get fried chicken in almost every kebab shop but that is not where you should go. You have to try the restaurant called Henne. It’s a German restaurant where all you can order is half chicken with potato salad or coleslaw/sauerkraut salad. Make sure you check the opening hours as they open late, mostly for dinner time. It can also get very busy so make sure to get there early, or be prepared to wait if your unable to make a reservation. In fact the Berlin wall used to run through the beer garden at Henne so there is a lot of history with this place as well.

           *Henne – Leuschnerdamm 25,  10999 Berlin ( Kreuzberg)

Burgers

Ok so maybe it’s not so German, but you can get very nice burgers in Berlin. I actually read that right now you can find many amazing burger joints that will absolutely blow your mind.  My favorite place is definitely Burgermeister, located under the train tracks. Make sure you order cheese fries as a side. There’s also places called “The bird” which I heard a lot about but unfortunately  never had a chance to go there. But its highly recommended by all my friends.

*Burgermeister – Oberbaumstr. 8,  10997 Berlin (  Kreuzberg)

*The bird – Am Falkplatz 5, 10437 Berlin ( Prenzlauer Allee)

German Food

I could say you would find German Restaurants in Berlin everywhere but I would be lying as kebab shops are definitely winning that battle. During my 3 years when I used to live there I visited a lot of places so it’s hard to recommend everything. I am from Poland and German kitchen is a somewhat similar to my local dishes, with all the sausages, sauerkraut and schnitzels so naturally I love it! I can tell you about 4 restaurant located very close to each other which I visited recently. I am sure there are even better or worse restaurants but I was always very happy with these:

  • Standige Vertretung – Schiffbauerdamm 8, 10117 Berlin
  • Berliner Republik – Schiffbauerdamm 8, 10117 Berlin
  • Maximilians – Friedrichstrasse – 185-190, 10117 Berlin
  • Augustiner am Gendarmenmarkt – Charlottenstasse 55, 10117 Berlin

Mexican

They say, if you want try real Mexican food go to … Mexico, or at least the US 🙂 But Berlin has a place that has made a pretty good attempt at serving good Mexican food. Obviously I haven’t been in Mexico yet, so I can’t tell you how close they are with authentic food, but how can you go wrong with making tacos or quesadillas.

  • Santa Maria – Oranienstr. 170, 10999 Berlin ( Kreuzberg)

Steakhouse

Believe it or not I had my first steak ever in Berlin and I immediately fell in love! There is a chain or restaurants around the city called Block House. The food there is fresh and tasty but unfortunately it is not the best for low budget travellers.

*Friedrichstrasse 100, 10117 Berlin ( Mitte )

*Theodor Heuss-Platz 12, 14052 Berlin ( Charlottenburg)

*Budapester Str. 42-50, 10787 Berlin  ( Zoologischer Garten)

*Karl-Liebknecht-Str 7 , 10178 Berlin ( Mitte, near Aleksanderplatz)

*Kurfurstendamm 161 , 10709 Berlin  ( Charlottenburg)

*Karl-Marx-Allee 91, 10243 Berlin ( Friedrichshain )

*Teltower Damm 36, 14169 Berlin  ( Zehlendorf)

Eating Healthy

For those who try to stay away from the Kebabs and other heavy food. I would recommend a place called Flamingo Fresh Food and Bar. fresh sandwiches, soups and  amazing coffee make this spot a winner. Also the staff are very friendly which typically doesn’t happen a lot in Germany 🙂

*Neustädtische Kirchstraße 8, 10117 Berlin

The Pub

No not a list of all the pubs in Berlin, this place is literally called “The Pub”. I wasn’t sure where I should place this restaurant as its more about the drinking experience but the food is pretty good as well. I haven’t tried the famous burgers there yet but they look fantastic. The drinking is where this place tops the list, each table at The Pub has it’s own electronic ordering system, and multiple taps so you can pour your own fresh Berliner Pilsner right at the table, the digital display then counts how much beer you are drinking. (Similar to how you pump petrol). This is a great place to go before a night out in the city or if you just want a different kind of dinning experience.

*Rochstraße 14, 10178 Berlin, Germany

Of course there is many other amazing places in Berlin which I haven’t been too yet, but I am there a lot so this list will be updated. There is a lot of places I am planning to visit so look out for more recommendations and photos (unfortunately this post doesn’t have too many as before as saying to myself “It tastes better if you stop and take a photo of it first” wasn’t that popular 🙂 If you have any favourite places in Berlin, please let me know I would love to try it!

  1. Such a great post. I love the german sausages 😀 I went to Berlin two years ago, didn’t get to try so much different foods, but the pubs are charming 🙂 That Döner Kebab looks really good. 😀

  2. The food looks delicious. Are there enough options for vegetarians in Germany? Being one, it is one of the major things I worry about when planning a trip to Europe

  3. There are a lot many restaurants who try to build that space from themselves in another country. For instance Italian food may be popular all over the world but there may be very few of those places that match up to the authentic Italian. And you find such places well, mark them as your favorites. Loved to read about Mexican food joint in Germany and a possibility of getting a great burger out there. And it’s amazing that there are places like Flamingo who consider making it healthier for the food lovers like me.

  4. I love German food… I went to Berlin and the food was amazing!! Your post is awesome and so useful!! Thanks for sharing with us 🙂

  5. I love Berlin and I haven’t even heard of all of these places. I can say that I haven’t had Mexican food in Berlin yet, I bet it’s delicious, just never came to my mind to have it there.

  6. I love going to other countries and tasting the array of food on offer. That kebab looks delicious, my mouth is watering just looking at it 🙂

  7. Döner kebab is also a speciality here, very popular, came with the Turks. But my personal favourite is by far German kitchen !

  8. Thank you for your tips! My memories of Berlin food was pastries, Currywurst, McDonald’s (and losing my wallet in a McDonalds), Schnitzels and shocking everyone when I ate close to half a kilo of Sauerkraut and then followed it with pickles!
