Dubrovnik, also known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic”, is easily one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and a true gem of Croatia. It is one of those rare places that actually looks like the postcards – and then some. Set along the stunning Adriatic Sea and surrounded by medieval walls, this city is packed with history and incredible views. It took me a while to get here, but I’m so glad I finally did – Dubrovnik is definitely worth the visit.

Best time to visit Dubrovnik 

The best time to visit Dubrovnik is definitely outside the peak summer season. While the city is stunning year-round, visiting during the off-season means fewer crowds and more room to explore at your own pace. Just keep in mind that some pubs might be closed, and museums and churches might have shorter opening hours.

As for the weather in Dubrovnik, it’s pretty mild throughout the year. In winter, temperatures hover around 12°C, while spring and autumn bring comfortable temps between 15°C and 22°C. Summer gets hot, with temperatures reaching 28°C to 32°C, so if you’re not a fan of the heat, the shoulder seasons are perfect!

How to get to Dubrovnik  / Booking Your Flight

Let’s start with a question: Where is Dubrovnik? Dubrovnik is located on the southern coast of Croatia, along the stunning Adriatic Sea. It’s easy to get to, with an international airport (Dubrovnik Airport) welcoming flights from various European cities. You can also reach the city from other places in Croatia by bus, train, or ferry.

To make the most of your budget, I recommend booking your flights in advance. Websites like Kiwi.com, Omio, and Expedia are great for comparing prices. And if you’re traveling from nearby cities, checking bus and train tickets can also be a good option for saving some money!

Where to stay in Dubrovnik / Booking your hotel 

Dubrovnik may not be a huge city, but most of the attractions are concentrated in and around the Old Town. The closer you stay to the Old Town, the more expensive the accommodation, but don’t worry – public transport in Dubrovnik is well-organized and affordable. You can easily get around by bus or taxi, and walking is always a great option, especially if you’re staying nearby.

When booking a hotel, I usually use Booking.com or Expedia, and I’ve never had any issues with them. Here are a few of my favourite hotels in Dubrovnik..

Getting a SIM Card

When it comes to staying connected in Dubrovnik, you have a few options for getting a SIM card. You can easily pick one up at Dubrovnik Airport, local telecom stores, or even convenience stores like Tisak or INA.

If you prefer a more convenient option, you can opt for an eSIM. For a hassle-free experience, I recommend using Airalo, which allows you to activate your eSIM before your trip, so you’ll be connected as soon as you land in Dubrovnik. Either way, it’s easy to stay connected without breaking the bank!

Getting to your hotel from the airport 

Dubrovnik Airport is situated in Čilipi, approximately 22 km south of the city center. The easiest and most budget-friendly way to reach the city is by taking the city bus, which runs regularly from the airport to the main bus station in Dubrovnik. The ride takes around 30-40 minutes. 

For a more comfortable and faster option, you can use Uber, which is available at the airport. Taxis are also an option, but they tend to be pricier than Uber. If you want a bit more convenience, you can book a private transfer in advance. Check Kiwi Taxi, Get Transfer, Holiday Taxis or Welcome Pickups 

Navigating the City

Getting Around Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik has a well-connected public transport system with 13 bus lines that cover the city and some nearby villages and towns. It’s a convenient way to get around, especially if you’re looking to explore beyond the Old Town.

You can walk everywhere in Old Town, but wear comfy shoes – it’s hilly and cobbled!

Paying for Public Transport
You can easily buy bus tickets at kiosks around the city, with a single ticket costing just €1.73 for an hour of travel across the entire city. If you prefer to get your ticket directly from the bus driver, be sure to have the exact fare of €2.50. For those staying longer, you can also purchase a daily or 3-day ticket, which offers a more cost-effective option for unlimited travel within a set period.

What to do / What to see in Dubrovnik

Exploring Dubrovnik is all about balancing famous landmarks with hidden gems. The most important monuments of Dubrovnik are located in the small Old Town, and all of them can be reached on foot without much difficulty. 

To make the most of your visit, I recommend booking a few tours and experiences. • Walk the City Walls – If you do one thing in Dubrovnik, make it this. Walking the City Walls is hands down one of the best ways to see the city – from above! The walls wrap around the entire Old Town (about 2 km) and give you unreal views over the terracotta rooftops, Fort Lovrijenac, the Old Port, and that insanely blue Adriatic Sea. Built over centuries, these are some of the best-preserved city walls in Europe, and you’ll feel like you’re walking through a movie set (because… you kind of are). If you’re into history, views, or just a good leg workout with a reward at the end, this is a must. Book your ticket here  Hot tip: Get there early – like right when they open at 8am – to beat the crowds and avoid roasting in the midday sun. Entry costs €40, which is a bit steep, but honestly worth it for the views and photos alone. 
• Explore the Old Town – The Old Town of Dubrovnik is where the magic happens. This historic area is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is full of charm and character. Start your adventure by walking through Pile Gate – it’s the main entrance to the Old Town. Once you’re in, you’ll find yourself on the Stradun, the main promenade, which is lined with beautiful buildings and cobbled streets that take you straight back in time. Make sure to visit some of the city’s top landmarks, like the Rector’s Palace, Dubrovnik Cathedral, Onofrio’s Large Fountain, Sponza Palace, and the Franciscan Church and Monastery. Fun fact: if you’re a Game of Thrones fan, you’ll recognize these spots as they were used for the scenes in King’s Landing. It’s the perfect mix of history, culture, and a bit of TV magic! • Cable Car to Mount Srđ – For the best views in town, hop on the cable car to Mount Srđ. In just a few minutes, you’ll be whisked 412 meters above sea level, where a stunning panorama of Dubrovnik, the Adriatic, and nearby islands awaits. At the top, you’ll find the famous white stone cross, Fort Imperial, a souvenir shop, and Panorama Restaurant – perfect for a drink with a view. You can hike or drive up, but honestly, the cable car is the easiest (and most scenic) option. Entrance: Just outside the Old Town’s Buža Gate, a short uphill walk.
• Game of Thrones Tour – For Game of Thrones fans, Dubrovnik is a must-visit! The city was the filming location for iconic scenes in King’s Landing. On a tour, you’ll visit key spots like Gradac Park (Joffrey’s wedding and death), Minčeta Tower (Daenerys in front of the House of the Undying), and Fort Lovrijenac (Red Keep). This spot gets packed during sunset, with people sitting on the surrounding rocks, enjoying the stunning views. It’s the perfect place to sip a cocktail while watching the sun dip into the Adriatic.
• Hit the Beaches – Dubrovnik’s beaches aren’t your typical sandy stretches, as most are small, rocky coves. But don’t let that stop you from enjoying the beautiful Adriatic! If you’re looking for a lively atmosphere, Banje Beach, just outside the Old Town, is the go-to spot with its sunbeds and beach bars. For a more tranquil experience, take a short trip to Sv. Jakov Beach. A bit further from the city center, this peaceful gem offers stunning views and a more relaxed vibe. You can also escape to nearby Lokrum or Lopud Islands for a beach day with fewer crowds.
• Kayaking Around the City Walls – For an active adventure in Dubrovnik, kayaking around the city walls is a must. Paddle through crystal-clear waters, with stunning views of the ancient walls, caves, and the city from a unique perspective. What to do in Dubrovnik in one day? 

If you’re arriving from a cruise ship or traveling from other parts of Croatia, make the most of your day in Dubrovnik by starting early. First thing, head straight to the city walls – they open at 9:00 AM, and it’s the best time to avoid the crowds and the heat. 

Once you’re done with the walls, take a leisurely stroll around the Old Town. The narrow streets, stone buildings, and lively atmosphere will transport you back in time. When you’re ready for a break, stop for lunch at one of the cafes or restaurants in the Old Town – you’ll have plenty of options to choose from.

To wrap up your day, head to Buza Bar for a drink and catch the sunset. It’s a super laid-back spot with stunning views right from the city walls. Alternatively, if you’re up for something a little more adventurous, take the cable car up to Mount Srđ. The views from the top are breathtaking, especially at sunset.

Eating like a local 

What to eat in Dubrovnik: 

Dubrovnik is full of amazing local dishes that reflect its Mediterranean heritage. Here are some must-try bites when you’re in the city:

1. Pasticada – A rich, slow-cooked beef dish, usually served with gnocchi or mashed potatoes. 
2. Grilled Fish – Fresh seafood is a must! Try the catch of the day, grilled to perfection with a drizzle of olive oil and lemon.
3. Black Risotto (Crni Rizot) – A unique Dalmatian dish made with squid ink, this risotto is full of flavor and perfectly paired with seafood.
4. Soparnik – A traditional Croatian pie stuffed with Swiss chard, onions, and garlic, often enjoyed as a snack.
5. Rozata – Dubrovnik’s take on crème brûlée, a delicious caramelized custard that’s the perfect way to end any meal.
